Bamboo like hollow stems to 6 metres ( depending on growing season and situation ) . Apparently the reed of the Bible , clarinets and has been used in construction .

Umbrella like foliage , pink spring flowers.

A rhizomatous deciduous perennial with large bold peltate leaves 3 to 6 feet tall , and up to 1.5 feet across , which appear after shorter stemmed pink flowers in spring ,and have red autumn colours. It does spread slowly and can be grown in sun or dense shade as long as the earth is moist. Origin W. USA.

Deciduous variegated pond grass also known as G. aquatica foliis variegatis.

Leaves striped white to cream and green , emerges with pinkish tints in spring . Needs restraint in a pond , fight it back each spring , then it's wonderful. It will also grow in the ordinary border , where it is not quite so enthusiastic and rude .
